1932-1936
1932: Bootham Crescent
During the first 10 years of existence, York City had managed to become a stable Division Three North club, with the occasional F.A. Cup run drawing larger crowds. Although Fulfordgate had been developed over the years, there was one thing that could not be changed: its location. When Bootham Crescent, a sports ground not far from the city centre, became available for lease the club acted quickly. A move could lead to increased attendances (which had become a concern) and opportunities for future growth and development. Remarkably, the move (including completion of legal formalities and construction of the Main and Popular Stands), took just four months to complete. The first game, a pre-season squad practice match, took place before the new season kicked off.

The Chocolate Kit
With the move to Bootham Crescent came another change in the club's colours. Maroon and white were replaced with chocolate and cream stripes, to be worn with white shorts and black socks. Although on the surface a rather odd choice of colour, Batters (2008) notes that it was "considered to be in recognition of the confectionary industry in York". It could be that this was an attempt to appeal to employees of Rowntree's and Terry's as part of a strategy to increase home attendances, now that the club was playing at an easy to reach, modern stadium.
The kits themselves were also of modern design. These are the first City jerseys to feature a collar and buttons replaced the old-fashioned laces, which have not been seen again. Inconsistency in the placement of stripes in relation to the collar is evident. Given the 5-year period for which these colours were used without significant change to design, it is possible that different companies may have produced sets of kit at different times and that these may have been used interchangeably, with those jerseys finding themselves in good condition in continued use.
