City fans were given the opportunity to vote for the 2010/11 home kit during April of 2009/10 with a choice between two templates from the Nike Teamwear catalogue. The 'Pin-Stripe Game' (already familiar through the 2009/10 away template) was defeated by the 'Classic III Game' jersey, which recalls the home jersey worn from 1985-1987. Both kits were presented with red shorts, a decision justified by a somewhat bizarre accompanying statement which claimed that red shorts would save fans money:
"After a number of years of red & white strips, the club returned to red & blue at the start of last season as it was felt that this would be a popular choice with supporters. However, this has caused problems in two areas, the most important one of which has been a feeling amongst the football management and players that the kit has made it difficult for players to identify their team mates, particularly under floodlights. Additionally, Conference rules request that dark colours are not used as these can cause clashes with the kit worn by match officials. Eagle eyed fans will have noticed that City have switched their shorts and socks from Blue to Red half way through the current season for the above reasons. In addition to this, although there are Red & Blue kits currently available in the Nike range, none of these are available to the club on a two year deal which would mean changing kits again at the end of next season. This would be unfair on fans as the club are committed to changing their strip every two years to save supporters the expense of buying new shirts every year." |
Shortly afterwards, and in apparent unity with the fans, it was revealed that:
"...the club have taken Supporters views into consideration and will now be incorporating a set of blue shorts into the fans choice of kit for the next two seasons." Unfortunately the club did not adhere to its promises. Not only did City kick the season off in an all-red kit (which remained first-choice until 17th November 2010, shortly after the appointment of Gary Mills as manager), but the home kit was also replaced at the end of the season with an entirely new strip.
